Porsche 991.1 Carrera S / Carrera 4S / GTS SOUL Valved Performance Exhaust System
Product Description
The SOUL Valved Performance Exhaust System is designed for Porsche 991.1 Carrera S, Carrera 4S, and GTS models with or without Porsche Sport Exhaust / PSE, delivering a substantially more aggressive naturally aspirated flat-six soundtrack while retaining a refined quiet mode when desired.
With the valves open, exhaust gases travel through a straight, unrestricted 2.5-inch performance path featuring smooth-radius bends and an X-pipe crossover. This provides significantly greater volume, improved exhaust flow, sharper throttle response, additional crackles and burbles, and a Cup Car-inspired exhaust note.
Close the valves and exhaust is routed through the factory Porsche side mufflers, dramatically reducing sound volume for highway cruising, neighborhoods, cold starts, or situations where a more discreet exhaust note is preferred.
For factory PSE-equipped cars, the SOUL exhaust works seamlessly with the original Porsche exhaust-valve controls. Carrera S / GTS vehicles without factory PSE control can be configured with SOUL's dedicated Valve Controller Kit, giving the driver independent control over the exhaust valves.
Integrated Helmholtz resonators target the 991.1 Carrera's inherent 3,000–3,500 RPM resonance range, maintaining comfortable drivability even on PDK-equipped vehicles and cars fitted with higher-flowing headers.

TRUE DUAL-PERSONALITY EXHAUST:
SOUL designed the Valved Performance Exhaust around a genuine difference between the quiet and aggressive operating modes.
Rather than merely changing sound slightly when the valves move, the system provides two fundamentally different exhaust paths.
Valves Open:
Exhaust gases receive a straight, unrestricted route through the 2.5-inch performance piping and out of the rear of the vehicle.
Valves Closed:
Exhaust is routed through the original Porsche side mufflers, using the factory mufflers to substantially reduce volume.
This allows the same vehicle to transition from a refined grand-touring exhaust to an aggressive naturally aspirated performance system at the press of a button.
VALVES OPEN:
With the valves commanded open, exhaust bypasses the restrictive muffled route.
Expect:
Substantially increased exhaust volume
Stronger naturally aspirated flat-six sound
Greater throttle-related character
More aggressive low- and midrange tone
Stronger high-RPM wail
Increased crackles and burbles during deceleration
More immediate acoustic response to throttle input
Cup Car-inspired exhaust character
Significantly more sound than the factory PSE system
The straight-through architecture prioritizes exhaust flow rather than forcing gases through a traditional rear muffler.
VALVES CLOSED:
When the exhaust valves close, gases are redirected through the original Porsche side mufflers.
This substantially reduces overall volume while preserving the recognizable naturally aspirated flat-six tone.
Expect:
Refined cruising behavior
Significantly reduced exhaust volume
Lower cabin presence
Minimal undesirable drone
Comfortable highway driving
Much quieter neighborhood operation
Greater flexibility than a fixed muffler-bypass exhaust
The factory side mufflers remain an important part of the overall SOUL system rather than being discarded.
FACTORY PSE INTEGRATION:
For vehicles already equipped with Porsche Sport Exhaust, the SOUL system integrates directly with the original exhaust-valve controls.
The Porsche factory system continues controlling the valves, allowing the driver to retain the familiar PSE operating experience.
No separate SOUL Valve Controller is required for this configuration.
Benefits include:
Retention of the factory PSE button
Retention of Porsche's original valve-control hardware
No separate wireless remote required
Cleaner installation
Full SOUL exhaust sound when the valves are commanded open
For PSE-equipped S and GTS models, this is the simplest configuration.
NON-PSE S / GTS CONFIGURATION:
Some Carrera S / GTS applications use vacuum-operated exhaust valves without the normal factory PSE-button control.
SOUL offers the exhaust with its Valve Controller Kit for these cars.
The controller gives the driver direct control over valve operation rather than relying on the factory vehicle configuration.
The non-PSE version costs approximately $120 more than the equivalent PSE configuration because the Valve Controller hardware is included.
VALVE CONTROLLER INSTALLATION:
Installing the SOUL Valve Controller on a non-PSE vehicle requires more work than installing the exhaust on a factory PSE car.
Installation requires:
Rear bumper removal
Locating and tapping a suitable switched 12V power source
Electrical installation of the valve-controller module
Vacuum-line installation
Connection to the exhaust-valve actuators
SOUL strongly recommends professional installation for the non-PSE Valve Controller configuration.
X-PIPE CROSSOVER:
SOUL incorporates an X-pipe into the exhaust architecture.
The X-pipe allows exhaust pulses from the left and right cylinder banks to interact rather than remaining completely isolated.
Benefits include:
Smoother exhaust tone
Better left-to-right bank blending
Improved scavenging potential
Increased volumetric-efficiency potential
More cohesive naturally aspirated sound
The X-pipe contributes to exhaust character with the valves both open and closed.
HELMHOLTZ ANTI-DRONE SYSTEM:
A freer-flowing rear exhaust can create substantial cabin resonance if undesirable frequencies are not addressed.
SOUL identified approximately:
3,000–3,500 RPM
as an inherent resonance range on the 991.1 Carrera.
This is particularly important on:
PDK-equipped vehicles
Cars used for extended highway driving
Vehicles equipped with freer-flowing headers
SOUL therefore incorporated tuned Helmholtz resonators into the exhaust.
The Helmholtz chambers target specific undesirable frequencies without forcing the primary exhaust gases through a conventional restrictive muffler.
This allows the system to retain high flow and aggressive sound while substantially improving cruising comfort.
DESIGNED FOR HEADER UPGRADES:
SOUL specifically considered customers combining the Valved Performance Exhaust with upgraded headers during development.
A high-flow rear exhaust combined with freer-flowing headers can become excessively loud or develop objectionable resonance if the rear system has not been properly acoustically engineered.
SOUL notes that a significant percentage of its 991.1 Carrera exhaust customers pair their rear exhaust with upgraded headers.
The Helmholtz system was therefore developed with combinations such as:
SOUL Long Tube Street Headers
SOUL Long Tube Competition Headers
in mind.
WITH FACTORY HEADERS:
When installed with the original Porsche headers and catalytic converters, the Valved Performance Exhaust primarily changes the rear exhaust system.
This configuration retains:
Factory headers
Factory catalytic converters
Factory oxygen sensors
while adding:
Increased rear exhaust flow
Driver-selectable exhaust volume
More aggressive flat-six sound
X-pipe crossover
Helmholtz anti-drone tuning
WITH SOUL LONG TUBE STREET HEADERS:
Pairing the Valved Exhaust with SOUL Long Tube Street Headers creates a comprehensive catted performance system.
Benefits include:
Long-tube header architecture
300-cell performance catalysts
Improved low- and midrange torque
Greater throttle response
2.5-inch valves-open rear exhaust
Stronger naturally aspirated sound
Retention of quiet-mode functionality
This is the more street-oriented complete exhaust combination.
WITH SOUL LONG TUBE COMPETITION HEADERS:
Pairing the Valved Exhaust with SOUL Long Tube Competition Headers creates the most aggressive header-and-valved-rear-exhaust configuration.
Benefits include:
Catless long-tube headers
Maximum upstream exhaust flow
Reduced catalyst-related heat
Straight-through 2.5-inch valves-open rear exhaust
Significantly increased flat-six sound
Retention of quieter valves-closed operation
Applicable ECU and emissions considerations should be addressed when removing the factory catalysts.
SOUND CHARACTER:
With the valves open, expect:
Dramatically increased flat-six volume
Stronger midrange growl
Increased high-RPM wail
More crackles and burbles
Greater mechanical character
Cup Car-inspired sound
Much stronger presence than factory PSE
With the valves closed, expect:
Refined low-key exhaust tone
Significantly reduced volume
Comfortable highway behavior
Minimal undesirable drone
Retention of naturally aspirated flat-six character
The large difference between the two modes is one of the system's defining features.
TIP OPTIONS:
Four tip configurations are available:
Reuse Factory Tips
Retains the original Porsche exhaust outlets for an OEM exterior appearance.
Polished Chrome
Bright polished finish for a traditional Porsche-inspired appearance.
Carbon Fiber
A darker motorsport-inspired option with carbon-fiber outer construction.
Black Chrome
Premium dark metallic finish for a more understated and aggressive rear appearance.
Black Chrome carries a higher price premium than the Polished Chrome and Carbon Fiber options.
PERFORMANCE:
SOUL describes the larger tubing, smooth-radius bends, X-pipe, and straight-through valves-open path as improving exhaust scavenging, volumetric efficiency, throttle response, and overall performance compared with the restrictive factory rear exhaust.
However, SOUL does not currently publish a standalone horsepower or torque figure for this specific rear exhaust by itself.
Specific numerical power gains should therefore not be advertised without additional supporting dyno data.
WEIGHT:
The SOUL exhaust is visibly smaller and less complex than the original Porsche rear-exhaust assembly, and customer feedback notes a reduction in weight.
However, SOUL does not publish a verified numerical factory-versus-SOUL weight comparison for this system.
A specific weight-savings claim should therefore not be advertised.
EMISSIONS NOTE:
When installed with the original Porsche headers and catalytic converters, the SOUL Valved Performance Exhaust modifies the rear exhaust system and does not itself remove the factory catalytic converters.
Installing separate Competition Headers or other emissions-related components can alter the vehicle's emissions configuration.
Customers are responsible for determining compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations for their complete vehicle configuration.
